It is much faster than the stock 500 GB drive that came in late 2012 MacBook Pro. Now I have a fast 1 TB machine. All 999.8 GB are available as one drive.I used the step by step instructions that I found at [...] to change out the hardware in less that 15 minutes. After a discussion concerning the software restore with the apple guru at my local apple store, I used his advice by starting the macbook pro with the new drive by holding down the option key. (Rather than using an OS X Recovery Disk - the apple guru said apple no long supports that product, even though i found it on apple's support website???) I then had to log onto my wifi network. It took about 10 minutes to download the next menu to my computer over the internet. It is available in capacities up to 1 terabyte which I ordered a few minutes ago and it only offers 5400 RPM speed because Seagate stopped producing 7200 RPM 2.5" hard disk drives recently. I have a Crucial M4 SATA-III 6 GB/s 128 GB solid state drive and an OCZ Vertex 3 SATA-III 6 GB/s 120 GB solid state drive. I have a System76 Lemur Ultra Thin (lemu4) notebook PC running Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit GNU/Linux. This works just fine. It is PC and operating system agnostic. It's almost as fast as my two SSDs once it learns how I use my PC regularly. It takes about one week of heavy PC usage for it to learn your user patterns and it will gradually get faster and it will perform better over time. What that means is that it has both a traditional mechanical hard drive and an SSD making up the whole drive. This means that you get a speed boost for frequently used data (OS, web browser, etc) as the drive shifts frequently used data to the SSD portion of the drive. This is NOT as fast as a true SSD, but it is capable of carrying much greater storage than a true SSD. And more cheaply. I don't even want to think about what a 1TB SSD would cost at this point...So it is working great, boot times are really fast (at least as fast as a 7200 RPM drive) and I look forward to frequently used data being sped up as well. The drive "learns" over time, so I do not expect to see best performance for a few weeks, at least. The drive arrived perfectly packed and ready to go.
